Pinging services - extend the reach of your content
May 20th, 2005
This topic came up quite a bit at Syndicate
Depends on what source you work from – at present we have around 50 pinging services available in the market (check here for some more details). nooked supports 15 of these services at present.
We are also seeing the larger Search players adopting pinging services – Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, etc.
I anticipate some interesting innovation in this space over the next few months. The feedmesh initiative is a good start.
RSS & Media Relations
April 22nd, 2005
I came accross this nugget on the Voce Nation blog, in relation to a meeting they had with Mike Bazeley of the San Jose Mercury News and co-author of the SiliconBeat blog
Some more proof on why companies should adopt RSS as part of their media relations strategy
“For example, syndication technology (RSS) has lots of potential, but most companies are only scratching the surface with respect to its application. Mike even attested at one point that if for no other reason than to avoid the black holes that are journalists email inboxes, companies should explore syndication of their press materials.”
nooked, the creator of an online service for publishing and measuring corporate news in RSS feeds, has launched two surveys to learn more about how people are using RSS (Really Simple Syndication). A survey for journalists and analysts can be found at http://www.nooked.com/survey1. The RSS survey for professional marketers is available at http://www.nooked.com/survey2. Results from the surveys will be released to participants by nooked in a webinar next month.
nooked launched its first online survey for journalists and analysts in early March. Survey questions include, “Do you know what RSS is?” and “How many RSS feeds are you subscribed to?” The purpose of the survey is to determine what percentage of journalists and analysts are using RSS to collect information for articles and reports.
nooked’s second survey, launched mid-March, targets communications, marketing and public relations practitioners. This survey will provide information about the percentage of corporate communications professionals using RSS to deliver corporate news, newsletters and press releases to customers and journalists. If survey participants have not implemented corporate RSS feeds, they are asked if and when they plan to integrate RSS into their communications plans.
“RSS adoption is steadily increasing, but we have yet to get a big picture of who is using RSS and why they’ve implemented the technology,” said Fergus Burns, CEO of nooked. “We hope these surveys will provide some insight into RSS usage with journalists and analysts and within the corporate communications community.”
“As a PR professional I still have to guess whether journalists are using RSS channels to track news,” said Guillaume du Gardier, PR practitioner and blogger at PR Thoughts. “I look forward to nooked’s survey results and hope they will shed some light on current RSS usage by the media.”
nooked’s RSS surveys will run until April 29, 2005. The results of both surveys will also be announced in a webinar next month. For more information about the webinar, subscribe to nooked’s RSS feed for company news at www.nooked.com, send your email address to info@nooked.com along with a request to be notified about the webinar, or complete one of the surveys to automatically receive the results. Participants who complete either survey are eligible to win prizes from nooked.

What is RSS? RSS is a new way to broadcast your corporate news, offering a quicker, easier communications channel to customers, partners and journalists. RSS is published in feeds or channels, and is read using a new category of software called news aggregators. Aggregators periodically check each RSS feed to which you are subscribed to see if new news items have been published, and display the results.
